Divination and Portents in the Roman World (Odense University Classical Studies, V. 21)

The ancient Romans believed that the gods sent signs of future events to men through the flight of birds, meteorological disturbances and other natural phenomena. These signs influenced every sphere of ancient life, both public and private, from a state's decision to go to war or make peace, hold an election or meet a public crisis to an individual's business, marriage or travel plans. The book illustrates how the various Roman divinatory techniques were inter-woven into the structures of ancient society as well as how they were used in literary contexts. The intriguing question of the alleged doublethink among the Roman intellectuals in their attitude to Divination is another important theme taken up in "Divination and Portents in the Roman World".

The latest of Michael Allen's distinguished studies of the Renaissance Neoplatonist, Marsilio Ficino (1433-1499), presents a difficult, fascinating text. Late in his career, Ficino wrote a commentary on the intractable passage in Book VIII of Plato's Republic that concerns the mysterious geometric or "fatal" number. He was thus the first modern interpreter of this famous passage, and Allen is the first in our era to translate and elucidate his remarkable commentary.
Allen's critical translation of Ficino's analysis of the fatal number passage shows how it develops philosophical, psychological, numerological, astrological, and prophetic themes that had a particular resonance at the end of the fifteenth century.
The six essays in this hook explore lbn Ezra's multi-faceted work and intellectual legacy. They illuminate his exegetical methodology; the role of astrology in his work; his philological insights into the Hebrew language; the possibility of his influence on the great Jewish philosopher and jurist. Maimonides; the numerous supercommentaries called forth by his enigmatic commentary; and modern Jewish perspectives on him. Contributors are Jay M. Harris, Simhah Kogut, Y.
History, Prophecy, and the Stars

Although astrology was viewed with suspicion by the medieval church, it became a major area of inquiry for the renowned cardinal and scholar Pierre d'Ailly, whose astrological and apocalyptic writings had a significant influence on Christopher Columbus. D'Ailly's writings on the stars, the focus of this book, clearly illustrate the complex relationships among astrology, science and Christian thinking in the late Middle Ages. Through an examination of his letters, sermons, and philosophical, astrological and theological treatises, Laura Ackerman Smoller reveals astrology's appeal as a scientific means to interpret history and prophecy, and not merely as a magical way to forecast and manipulate one's own fate. At the same time, she shows how d'Ailly dealt with delicate problems - such as free will and God's omnipotence - in elevating astrology to a compelling, but not always consistent, "natural theology". The French cardinal's most intriguing prediction was for the advent of Antichrist in 1789, one that stemmed from his deep concern over the Great Schism (1378-1414). Smoller maintains that the division in the church led d'Ailly to fear the imminence of the apocalypse, and that he eventually turned to astrology to quell his apocalyptic fears, thereby gaining confidence that a church council could heal the Schism.

This study reveals for the first time the full extent of Chaucer's use of astronomy in his work and sheds new light on the poet's character, literary techniques, and wider purposes. Part I discusses the physical, astronomical, astrological, and geomantic elements of Chaucerian cosmology, providing an introduction to the history of the techniques of medieval astronomy, and argues that Chaucer was indeed the author of the treatise on the equatorium. Part II identifies astronomical allegory in more than a dozen of Chaucer's works.

A New Sense of Destiny: Renewal of Vision Through the Lost Language

The 21st Century, the beginning of a millennium, cries out for a new vision of who we are and what our future might be. Old boundaries and ancient languages have kept us too long from understanding each other. A greater vision of who we have been and what we may become rises to view in A NEW SENSE OF DESTINY from Ancient Symbols by Dr. George W Fisk. The author, a Christian pastor, believes certain ancient symbols found on medieval cathedrals for the benefit of the illiterate worshippers have the power to communicate for peace and understanding when written words have failed.
Over aeons and aeons of time, long before the availability of the written word, stargazers developed stories about the people, birds and animals they saw in the night skies. Much of their conversation was expressed in terms of these glowing symbols. Using their terminology he gives new perceptions and warmth to the four gospels of the Christian Bible.
Also, importantly to the 21st century, he describes how symbols can unite us whereas written and spoken languages tend to erect walls of separation.. As he writes in the chapter, Enter the Computer: “In the new day of computer-human relationships the need for human beings to rediscover and expand the symbolic vocabulary of the ancients will exist more than ever.”
At the same time in the chapter, Bridging the Gulf between East and West, he writes on God being revealed through other faiths. He quotes S. Radhakrishnan professor at Oxford and leader of India who wrote in 1939, “The supreme task of our generation is to give a soul to the growing world-consciousness, to develop ideals and institutions necessary for the creative expression of the world soul, to transmit those loyalties and impulses to future generations and train them into world citizens.”
A NEW SENSE OF DESTINY gives thought-provoking vision into the 21st century.
His reign (1576–1612) roughly mirrored that of Queen Elizabeth I of England, and while her famous court is widely recognized as a sixteenth century Who’s Who, Rudolf ’s collection of mathematicians, alchemists, artists, philosophers and astronomers—among them the greatest and most subversive minds of the time—was no less prestigious and perhaps even more influential.

Driven to understand the deepest secrets of nature and the riddle of existence, Rudolf invited to his court an endless stream of genius—Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe, German mathematician Johannes Kepler, English magus John Dee, Francis Bacon, and mannerist painter Giuseppe Archimboldo among many others. Prague became the artistic and scientific center of the known world—an island of intellectual tolerance between Catholicism, Protestantism, and Islam.

Combining the wonders and architectural beauty of sixteenth century Prague with the larger than-life characters of Rudolf ’s court, Peter Marshall provides an exciting new perspective on the pivotal moment of transition between medieval and modern, when the foundation was laid for the Scientific Revolution and the Enlightenment.

Studies On Astral Magic In Medieval Jewish Thought (Brill Reference Library of Judaism) (Brill Reference Library of Judaism)

The book describes a fascinating encounter between astrology and magic, exposing how Hermetic magic seeped into Jewish literature and Jewish philosophy. Following astral magic in its convoluted course, this original work sheds new light on rationalist Jewish thought in the Middle Ages. Having attained its authority mostly from its use in medical practice, astral magic also developed a theology and provided a key to biblical interpretation. Judah Halevi, Nahmanides, and others explained the meaning and influence of the commandments according to magic-astral models and techniques, generating a new perspective within medieval Jewish philosophy. The book is intended for scholars of philosophy, Jewish thought, astrology and magic, as well as for the general public with an interest in these areas.

Lucian (ca. 120–190 CE), the satirist from Samosata on the Euphrates, started as an apprentice sculptor, turned to rhetoric and visited Italy and Gaul as a successful travelling lecturer, before settling in Athens and developing his original brand of satire. Late in life he fell on hard times and accepted an official post in Egypt.

Although notable for the Attic purity and elegance of his Greek and his literary versatility, Lucian is chiefly famed for the lively, cynical wit of the humorous dialogues in which he satirises human folly, superstition and hypocrisy. His aim was to amuse rather than to instruct. Among his best works are A True Story (the tallest of tall stories about a voyage to the moon), Dialogues of the Gods (a 'reductio ad absurdum' of traditional mythology), Dialogues of the Dead (on the vanity of human wishes), Philosophies for Sale (great philosophers of the past are auctioned off as slaves), The Fisherman (the degeneracy of modern philosophers), The Carousal or Symposium (philosophers misbehave at a party), Timon (the problems of being rich), Twice Accused (Lucian's defence of his literary career) and (if by Lucian) The Ass (the amusing adventures of a man who is turned into an ass).

The Loeb Classical Library edition of Lucian is in eight volumes.

On Historical Astrology: The Book of Religions and Dynasties (Islamic Philosophy, Theology, and Science, V. 33-34)

These two volumes provide the Arabic, Latin and English text on historical astrology of the Middle Ages. The text is attributed either to Abu Ma'sar (787-886) or to his pupil Ibn al-Bazyar, and was translated into Latin in the mid-12th century. In eight books (parts) it provides the scientific basis for predictions concerning kings, prophets, dynasties, religions, wars, epidemics and more, by means of conjunctions of planets and other astrological phenomena, comets and other astronomical factors. It is cited frequently by both Arabic and Latin authors. These editions provide the context of these citations. Aside from its interest for cultural history and the history of science, the work provides several details concerning Islamic history.

The gentlemen of medieval and Renaissance Europe had three all-consuming passions: warfare, courtly love, and hunting with a hawk or hound--and the philosophy behind the last of the trio really encompasses them all. Hunting, the sport of kings, served as training for battle, a rite of manhood, and a powerful ritualistic pastime. In vivid and engrossing detail, here are all the appropriate methods for hunting deer, boar, wolves, foxes, bears, otters, birds, hares...even unicorns! A dazzling diversity of sources (poems, ballads, letters, court directives, royal accounts, gamekeepers' handbooks, psalters) illustrate how hunting and hawking appear throughout medieval art and literature as metaphors and motifs for everything from romance to combat.

The main focus of this volume is the study of Abraham Ibn Ezra's scientific thought within the historical and cultural context of his times (1089-1167). His scientific contribution may be understood as the very embodiment of "the rise of medieval Hebrew science", a process in which Jewish scholars gradually adopted the holy tongue as a vehicle to express secular and scientific ideas. The first part of the book provides a comprehensive picture of Ibn Ezra's scientific corpus. The second part studies his linguistic strategy. The third and fourth parts study Ibn Ezra's introductions to his scientific treatises, and the fifth part is devoted to studying four "encounters" with Claudius Ptolemy, the main scientific character featuring in Ibn Ezra's literary work.

The Speculum Astronomiae and its Enigma: Astrology, Theology and Science in Albertus Magnus and his Contemporaries (Boston Studies in the Philosophy of Science)

The attribution of the Speculum Astronomiae to Albertus Magnus became a controversial issue only recently, when the great neo-Thomist historian Pierre Mandonnet suggested -- without any antecedents -- that the author was Roger Bacon rather than Albert. Mandonnet's theses were refuted by Lynn Thorndike and have since then been the subject of widespread discussion.
The present historiographical case-study considers this debate in the light of an analysis of texts by Albert himself, as well as other important authors, such as Bacon, Bonaventura, Thomas Aquinas, Witelo, Campanus of Novara, and others, which shows how widespread the general concept of the influence of the stars and other astrological ideas to be found in the Speculum were. Most of the scientific ideas of the Middle Ages were based on principles derived from the notion of celestial influence and its consequences. The Speculum drew the fundamental outlines of this discipline into a theoretical and bibliographical introduction -- no small achievement -- and was consequently greeted with great interest and used as a standard reference book for many centuries. Set against the background of discussions taking place in the 1260s, within the Dominican Order as well as in the Faculties of Arts, Zambelli removes all doubt that the Speculum was written by Albert, possibly with some collaboration.

This new volume of papers by Julio Samso deals with the development of astronomy and astrology in al-Andalus and the Maghrib between the 10th and the 19th centuries. Opening with a survey of the social history of the exact sciences in al-Andalus, the book then looks at astronomical tables: the first stages of the introduction of al-Khwarizmi's and al-Battani's tables through the school of Maslama al-Majriti, the development of Ibn al-Zarqalluh/Azarquiel's theories in Maghribi zijes (Ibn al-Banna' and Ibn Azzuz) and the abandonment of this tradition towards the end of the 14th century. From this period onwards new Eastern zijes (Muhyi al-Din al-Maghribi, Ibn al-Shatir, Ulugh Beg) are introduced in the Maghrib and, towards the beginning of the 17th century, a translation of Abraham Zacut and Jose Vizinho's "Almanach Perpetuum" (end of the 15th century) becomes well known in the whole Islamic world, from Morocco to the Yemen. As well as zijes themselves, the author also deals with theoretical astronomy (the use of an elliptical deferent for Mercury in Ibn al-Zarqalluh's equatorium and the criticisms of Ibn al-Haytham and Jabir B. Aflah on Ptolemy's determination of the parameters of the same planet), and with the use of zijes for the calculation of horoscopes, and an experimental astrological method for the correction of mean motion planetary tables (Ibn Azzuz).

The story of the history of Western astrology begins with the philosophers of Greece in the 5th century BC. the Greeks added numerology, geometry and rational thought. The philosophy of Plato and later of the Stoics made astrology respectable, and by the time Ptolemy wrote his textbook the Tetrabiblos, in the second century AD, the main lines of astrological practice as it is known today had already been laid down. In future centuries astrology shifted to Islam only to return to the West in medieval times where it flourished until the shift of ideas during the Renaissance.

The Abbreviation of the Introduction to Astrology: Together With the Medieval Latin Translation of Adelard of Bath (Islamic Philosophy, Theology, and Science)

Abu Mabwar (787-886, in Western Europe known as Albumasar) was the best known astrologer of the Middle Ages in both the Islamic world and the Christian West. His master-work was the Great Introduction to astrology, which was copied into numerous Arabic manuscripts, translated twice into Latin, and printed in the Renaissance. However, he himself made an abbreviation of this work, which summarised the astrological information in the larger work in a convenient way. This abbreviation survives in two Arabic manuscripts and a Latin translation made by Adelard of Bath in the early twelfth century. The Abbreviation of the Introduction to Astrology contains the first edition of the Abbreviation and the Latin translation, with English translations of both texts and several indexes. As well as being of interest to cultural historians it should serve as a useful introduction to medieval astrology.

A History of Western Astrology: Medieval and Modern Worlds v. 2

Following on from "The Dawn of Astrology", Nicholas Campion examines the foundation of modern astrology in the medieval and Renaissance worlds. Astrology is a major feature of contemporary popular culture, with recent research indicating that 99 per cent of adults know their birth sign. In the modern West, astrology thrives as part of our culture, yet it is a pre-Christian, pre-scientific world-view that continues to provide meaning for millions. Medieval and Renaissance Europe marked the high watermark for astrology, flourishing at all levels of society. It was a subject of high theological speculation, whilst also used to advise kings and popes, and to arrange an activity - from the beginning of a battle to the most auspicious time to have one's hair cut. It was applied to magic and medicine, could locate buried treasure and was regularly used to predict the Apocalypse.Nicholas Campion examines the foundation of modern astrology in the medieval and Renaissance worlds as the ancient and classical theories of the relationship between humanity and the stars adapted. Spanning the period between the adoption of astrology in the Islamic world and the subsequent transfer of Islamic science to Europe, to the rise of popular astrology on the web, Campion challenges the historical convention that astrology flourished only between the twelfth and seventeenth centuries. Concluding with a discussion of astrology's popularity and appeal in the twenty-first century, Campion asks whether it should be seen as an integral part of modernity.

Historians of science often acknowledge the academic status of astrology in the early modern period, but mostly fail to explore its relation with other disciplines and its role in society. This book seeks to fill that gap. The first part of the book examines the practices and functions that shaped late medieval astrology, and relates how its academic status became discredited, both in northern Italy and the Low Countries. The second part of the book examines various counter-strategies of astrological reform, and shows how these ultimately failed to restore public trust in academic astrology. This book provides a new level of detail to the history of astrology. It also establishes important new links with other fields, like the history of universities, humanism, astronomy, medicine, and instrument building.
This practical manual offers a method of determining the birth sign based on calculations performed on the subject's name and his or her mother's name. The critical edition includes: a literary, historical and linguistic study; and English translation; and a Catalan-English glossary. The "Tractat" reveals Catalan sources for prognostication, a unique expression of medieval syncretism, the mingling of traditions and the development of new ideas.
Its influence extended to natural philosophy and cosmology, medicine, agriculture, weather-forecasting and alchemy. Yet astrology was never an entirely acceptable practice, attracting both religious and scientific objections. These ambivalent medieval attitudes are just one aspect of this wide-ranging and clearly-written account of astrological ideas and practices in medieval society, comprehensively illustrated from a wide range of manuscripts.

The biblical commentaries of Rabbi Abraham Ion Ezra (1089/1092-1164/1167) have become indispensable to anyone desiring a full appreciation of the biblical text, and this noted scholar also wrote extensively on philology, philosophy. mathematics, and astrology. Tzvi Langermann, Nahum Sarna, Uriel Simon, and Isadore Twersky. Two of the essays are in Hebrew.

A History of Western Astrology

The story of the history of Western astrology begins with the philosophers of Greece in the 5th century BC. the Greeks added numerology, geometry and rational thought. The philosophy of Plato and later of the Stoics made astrology respectable, and by the time Ptolemy wrote his textbook the Tetrabiblos, in the second century AD, the main lines of astrological practice as it is known today had already been laid down. In future centuries astrology shifted to Islam only to return to the West in medieval times where it flourished until the shift of ideas during the Renaissance.
